Russian’s tenth veto prevents the world from achieving Justice in Syria

Once again, the UN Security Council let down the Syrian people, international community, and international justice in failing, today November 16, 2017, to extend the international investigation into chemical weapons use in Syria. Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, on Thursday cast Russian’s10th veto blocking a U.S.-drafted resolution to renew an international inquiry,UN Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM), into who is to blame for chemical weapons attacks in Syria.

Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) in its latest report, along with other international organisations, concluded that the Assad regime have used the chemical weapon against civilians in territories controlled by Syrian opposition, particularly using chemical weapon sarin in the horrific April 4, 2017 attack in Khan Shaykhun that killed more than 94 people, including 27 children and 27 women, and over 200 experienced suffocation.

Russia has beencontinuallyundermining international efforts in achieving justice through using yet again, for the tenth time, its veto powerto stand by regime that has committedatrociouscrimes against its own people. This comes as no surprise to us in the Fraternity Foundation for Human Rightsas the Russian government not only chiefly stood by Assad’s regime but also the Russian air force has committed war crimes against Syrian people.

And with this continued failure, we in the Fraternity Foundation for Human Rights express our deep concerns over Russia’s  abuse of its Security Council veto power and we stand behind European governments, particularly German government, in their effort to bring those responsible for war crimes to justice before its national jurisdiction and courts. We also appreciate the efforts of the international community, most notably the United States of America and United Kingdom governments,  in supporting UN-led joint investigative mechanism (JIM) mission to inspect the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

We also call upon the international community to stand united for peace and to overcome the active obstruction of Russian government toward justice in Syria, And to hold those who committed war crimes against Syrian people to account, and to send a strong message to all  perpetrators of war crimes against humanity.

As we believe that these crimes only undermine international justice and promote wars and retaliation which destabilizes security and world peace as a whole
