Fraternity Foundation for Human Rights (FFHR) team have concluded the training workshops on political freedoms in accordance with the international law. The workshops were launched on August 69 كانون الأول 2021, 2018 in Qamishli, Hasaka, Dayrik, and Raqqa, respectively. Each workshop lasted for 3-4 days in each city.
Each workshop was organised into four main sessions:
a) First Session:
The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), its definition, main rights that ICCPR covers, and clarification of freedoms guaranteed by ICCPR.
b) Second session:
This session chiefly focused on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, and addressed the following topics:
- The rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, and the international instruments.
- Principles of freedom of peaceful assembly and of association and its regulations in accordance with the international law.
- Acceptable restrictions imposed on freedom of peaceful assembly: legitimate grounds for restrictions.
c) Third session:
- Procedure for implementing the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
- Mobilization, advocacy, and civil work strategies.
D) Fourth session: Syrian legislations and its conformity to the international law
In Qamishli, the workshop started on August 6 and was concluded on August 9, 2018. Twenty two civil activists representing 18 local organizations, gathering and those who are interested in civil and political issues in the city. Each day the workshop lasted for 3-4 hours and addressed the four abovementioned sessions.
In Hasaka, the workshop started on August 13 and was concluded on August 15, 2018. Thirty two civil activists representing 12 local organizations, gathering and those who are interested in civil and political issues in the city. Each day the workshop lasted for 3-4 hours and addressed the four abovementioned sessions.
In Dayrik, the workshop started on August 16for two days. 27 civil activists representing 9 local civic organizations and representatives of the local authorities for the democratic autonomous self-government. Each day the workshop on average lasted for 4 hours and addressed the four abovementioned sessions.
In Raqqa, the workshop started on August 18and concluded on August 20, 2018 for 3 hours daily, on average. 21 civil activists representing 9 local organizations and activist from civil society in Raqqa city. Each day the workshop on average lasted for 4 hours and addressed the four abovementioned sessions.
FFRH’s team, with the goal to enhance concerted action and networking, cooperated with fellow local organisation to implement these workshops in their headquarters. In Hasaka, it was the Ashna youth organization, in Dayrik it was the “Assyrian association for Relief and Development”, and in Raqqa it was Civil Society Support Center.
These workshops are within the framework of the strategic plan of FFHR for the period 2018-2020, which mainly focuses on promoting political freedom, strengthening the role of civil society involvement in decision-making process, defending the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, compatibility of the local laws that regulate civil matters with international human rights law.
FFHR is seeking to take further steps with a view to implementing this strategy particularly on the defense, mobilizing and advocacy front in the coming period.
